Made to belong, built to last

A replacement window should never look out of place. The proportions, glazing bars and subtle details all matter, particularly in an older property.

We specialise in new timber sash windows and entrance doors that complement the original architecture, without compromising on the comfort expected from modern glazing. From individual replacements to complete house projects, we'll help you find the right approach.

We also offer sash window refurbishment and draught proofing.

Traditional box sash windows

The beauty of a proper sash window

There's something special about a well-proportioned sash window: the slender glazing bars, the depth of the frames, the way the two sashes sit together.

Our timber double glazed box sash windows keep those details while adding the comfort of modern glazing, whether you're replacing a handful of windows or all 20 in a Victorian house.

Period entrance doors

First impressions that last

The entrance is often the most distinctive feature of an older property, and getting the proportions right makes all the difference.

But appearance is only part of the story.

A new door in an old, poorly aligned frame still lets in draughts and water. That's why our Accoya doors are always fitted with a new matching frame.

Front door enquiries

Let's talk about the price first

A new period entrance door is a significant investment. Before arranging a visit, we'll ask for photographs of your existing door, inside and out, and an example of a design you like. We'll then explain the specification and provide a starting price, so you can decide whether it's right for you.

Timber French doors

A graceful connection to the outdoors

Traditional French doors can bring light into a room and create a natural connection between the house and garden.

We pay particular attention to their proportions, glazing arrangement and surrounding details, ensuring the new doors sit comfortably within the existing architecture.

Refurbishment and draught proofing

If your original sash windows rattle, stick or let the cold in, they don't always need replacing. A careful refurbishment can make them warmer, quieter and easier to open.

  • Draught proofing to cut draughts, rattles and noise
  • Sticking sashes eased so they open smoothly
  • Worn beads and fittings replaced where needed
  • Broken sash cords replaced

Meet the founder

It started in a freezing Victorian house

I grew up in a Victorian house in Streatham Hill with no central heating. I still remember ice forming on the inside of the windows.

I began my career restoring original sash windows, then moved into new double glazed timber sashes and period front doors. You'll deal with me or my wife, Nicola: no sales team, no pressure. If I don't think your windows need replacing, I'll tell you.

Our approach

It's the details that matter

Advice without the sales pitch

Protection while we work

Floors, stairs and working areas are covered with dust sheets. We treat your property with the respect it deserves.

Care for original features

Installation is planned so you're not left with an open window overnight, even when we're replacing several windows.

Independent reassurance

We're a FENSA registered company, with Phil registered as an installer and surveyor. Our work also comes with insurance-backed protection through Installsure.

Questions

Before you get in touch

Will new windows look right on a period house?

That's central to everything we do.

Traditional sash windows have distinctive proportions, glazing bars and profiles that contribute to the appearance of the building. We take these details into account when planning replacements.

The intention is to retain the original character while introducing the benefits of modern double glazing.

What's the difference between Redwood and Accoya?

Both are quality timbers suitable for traditional sash windows.

Our Premium range uses treated Redwood, backed by a 10-year guarantee against wet rot, dry rot and insect attack.

Our Luxury range uses Accoya, a modified timber with exceptional resistance to wet rot. The Accoya timber carries a manufacturer's 50-year wet rot guarantee.

We can explain the differences when discussing your project.

How do indicative prices work?

We prefer to discuss prices before arranging an appointment.

For sash windows, we'll ask a few questions about the number and type of windows you're considering.

For front doors, we'll request photographs of the existing entrance and an example of your preferred design.

We can then provide an indication of cost before booking a home visit and preparing a detailed estimate.

What are your lead times?

New window and door installations typically have a lead time of 8 to 12 weeks.

This starts once your 50% deposit has been received, final measurements have been completed and drawings approved.

Timescales can vary depending on the project, and we'll explain the expected schedule as part of the quotation process.

Will you damage my plaster?

Removing old frames can sometimes disturb surrounding plaster, particularly in older properties where the finishes may already be fragile.

We take care during removal and installation to minimise this wherever possible.

We also protect floors, stairs and working areas with dust sheets, and clean up properly before leaving.

Will I be left without a window overnight?

No. We arrange installations so that no window opening is left open overnight.

This is particularly important for larger projects where several windows are being replaced over multiple days.

We'll discuss the installation arrangements beforehand so you know what to expect.

What guarantees do I get?

All new windows and front doors come with our 10-year service warranty for problems caused by installation or manufacture, subject to exclusions.

Premium Redwood windows have a 10-year timber guarantee against wet rot, dry rot and insect attack.

Luxury Accoya windows and Accoya front doors have a manufacturer's 50-year wet rot guarantee on the timber.

We also provide insurance-backed protection through Installsure.

Are you FENSA registered?

Yes. The Period Window & Door Company is FENSA registered.

Phil is also a FENSA registered installer and surveyor.

We register qualifying window installations with FENSA where applicable and provide the relevant documentation after completion.

Is there any work you don't do?

We focus on new timber sash windows, period front entrance doors and timber French doors.

For existing sash windows, we offer refurbishment, draught proofing and sash cord replacement.

We don't undertake general door repairs, uPVC or aluminium installations, or emergency call-outs.

Our main focus is planned replacement work, particularly larger projects involving several windows or doors.
